Beautiful Girl

The high court of her mother's Colombian lineage,
Her father stark European, declared her beautiful
Round faced with strong brows and wavy black hair,
Full flesh on her short bones with the air of an individual
Beautiful, yes, but individual
In a field of sunflowers, a tulip is not welcome,
No matter how pretty, it is an outsider,
It's bulb is too fat, it's color is too strong,
The outsider is snipped away in the name of uniformity
Like the runt of the litter, no,
The high court of her mother's Colombian lineage,
Her father stark European, it could not make her welcome,
So she never felt beautiful
